Question:

Teacher looking to tutor?

I'm a credentialed k-6 teacher in California. I taught for 7 years before staying home with my child, two years ago. I want to tutor a couple of kids maybe once or twice a week and charge $30 an hour. Does this sound like a reasonable rate?

I was thinking of getting a card and having some of my teacher friends hand it out to parents if they're looking for a tutor. Does this sound good?

  1. $30 could be kind of low depending on the area you live in. You are a experienced certified teacher in CA, so you should probably charge a little more than that.

The card idea is great and you can even get free business cards from a website I love... www.vistaprint.com . You have to pay a little shipping, but the price is still excellent for 250 business cards. The shipping cost depends on how fast you want it delivered.

  2. Your fee is fine.  I would also leave cards with area schools.  Parents call the school office all the time looking for a list of tutors available in their area.

  3. Fee sounds fine.  Your method of finding clients sounds great; nothing like a reference from another professional!

Additionally, you might create a letter-size flyer, with tear off numbers, that you can post at your local public library or businesses locally that offer "Message Boards."
