How do you become a school guidance counsellor? Do you have to work your way up from teaching?

Also, can someone list the top 10 teaching universities in the US?

Simple.  Enroll in college classes offering a master's degree leading to state certification  in counseling.  

However, most counselors make the mistake in believing that certification in counseling makes them a "couch psychologist."   You will not be a psychologist!  Your job is to simply provide guidance... primarily in advising and assisting students  seeking help in making applications to institutions of higher learning.

Anything else represents delusional folks that are working far beyond their professional skills and licensing.

And, don't worry about the top ten colleges...if you're going for a degree in education, most state colleges will give you everything you need to become either a teacher or a counselor.  The big SECRET is...are you cut out to be a GOOD teacher or counselor.  The skill is INNATE and cannot be successfully taught.
