Teachers, how do you like your job?

I was doing a field assignment for college, where a student goes to a classroom in a school and observes and I had a teacher tell me 'Don't be a teacher, it's very hard work.' I couldn't believe it.

Teachers, given the chance, would you decide to be a teacher again?

  1. One time when i was having an exam...A naked male student run in and start chasing a girl who is taking the exam... I as a male teacher saw that and start chasing that student... (no i am not a homosexual person) I dont know if he is in my class but i certainly didn't catch him. (i only chase him outside the room the first time but he kept coming in after a while. Where are the security anyways??) Then i come back to the room every students are all talking and sharing information in the frikin EXAM... WTF should i have done? i was like quite quite...then when the exam was over most of the students have almost similar answers (multiple choice exam). WTF.

  2. I taught school for 7 years and then decided to leave the career for something less stressful.  My hat is off to those who can stay in it for the long haul.  No, I wouldn't choose to teach again.

  3. teachers hated me

  4. I absolutely love my job, and I would definitely follow the same career path if I had the chance to do it again.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely ups and downs, and sometimes I do wonder if I could do something else, but my heart always brings me back to teaching. I love the kids, and I do love the challenge. I love seeing the progress they make from beginning to end.

It's mostly the paperwork and the parent contact that gives me a hard time. The paperwork is not hard; it's just that there's so much to keep track of. I work at a school where parent involvement is extremely low. As a teacher, a parent (my son goes to school there), and the PTA president, I am trying to boost involvement...yet another challenge! :)

  5. I've been an elementary teacher for 16 years.  I would decide to be a teacher again.  I got my degree in business administration and I hated working in the corporate world.  The people I worked with were very shallow.  The only part of my job I enjoyed was training others, so I went back to school to get my credential.  Initially I thought I would teach high school Spanish, but I along the way I had the chance to work with younger kids and decided that was for me.

The teacher who advised you not to become a teacher is burned out.  It happens in every profession.  It doesn't matter what you choose to do, there will be people who hate their job.  My MD left his practice suddenly, saying he wanted to get out of the field.  He was only about 50.  Teaching is hard and you will find there are children and parents who don't appreciate what you do, but there are just as many, wonderful people.

  6. thats your choice you wanna do that job or not

  7. I knew I wanted to teach back when I was 5 years old and dragging neighbourhood kids in off the street to teach them their letters! Many years later, I'm still a teacher and absolutely love my job! I use my witty sense of humour all the time (see example below) and joke around with my students (who feel more like my children), and they in turn joke around with me. This makes a great, fun learning environment but they also know that I have my limits and a toe out of line means some serious consequences.

I find that the teachers who are frustrated and saying remarks like that are generally two kinds. The first kind is the teacher who is so burnt out, past caring, and just can't stop being angry at the system, the parents, and the administration. These kind are generally unliked by students as they're too exasperated to give a c**p. The second kind are those who should probably have never gone into the profession in the first place and cannot relate to students. They talk AT the students, and as if they were adults.

In my classroom, I encourage laughter and keep a "Quote Book" of all the funny, stupid, and completely ludicrous sayings that occur in class by either a student or myself. One of my favourite ones involved me explaining relative pronouns using a birthday cake as an example...

Student: Is the cake a situation or a concept?

Me: Well, if someone popped out of the cake, then you have a situation.

I would do this job over again for a million years!

  8. Without a doubt...it is the best job I have ever had!

  9. It is hard work, but I love it about 90% of the time; which is a lot higher than any other job I have had

  10. everyone hates teachers.so why i need to be a teacher.peace!!

  11. im a daycare teacher n i juz found out that being a teacher is harder than it looks! such a low pay but high pressure! i almost 1 2 quit but i love children, so it is hard for me to leave them since i teach them for 3 months!

  12. Hard work is play for the interested.  I love teaching, so it comes easily to me.  Teaching is as hard as you make it, literally.  I choose the easy and effective battles as rarely as possible.

Students like teachers who like and respect them.  I love all children as my own.  Happy students equals happy teacher.  Likewise, I am happy, so the kids are too.  Fear and learning cannot coexist.  Plato said, "Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each."  Discovery of these geniuses is my passion and reward for teaching.

Shortages and quality issues are inherent to low wages, but those are the communities problems.  Pay teachers more not just because they deserve it, but mostly because you want more teachers like me in your schools (and fewer of the ones reflected in the comments above).

  13. Yes, I would.  I love my job.

  14. I have taught for 38 years.  It IS very hard work, but I love it.
