Question:

Teachers, question about subbing after teaching?

I taught for seven years. Then I quit my job to stay home and raise my child. Now I want to go back to work, on a very part time basis. I'm thinking of subbing about 2-3 times a month. I'd like to work at my old school where I taught because I like the people there so much and it's really close to home. Do you think it would be strange for me to be a sub after being a teacher at that school? I want to do it to get out of the house a little, make some extra money, and keep connected to the district where I would like to teach again someday. What do you think fellow teachers?

  1. I've seen many teachers quit to stay at home with their kids and then just sub at the same school.  They actually find it nice to socialize with people they enjoy and the kids enjoy seeing them again.  Plus once you have been a teacher it's so much easier to sub because you know how to handle a lot of situations that other subs don't.

  2. I'm going to be doing it starting in about 2 weeks! And, so glad you decided to stay home to raise your children. I know this is a little off your subject, but I taught across the hall from a wonderful friend and colleague who put her infants in daycare at about a month old to come back to teaching. She has 3 children, all have been in daycare since small (and I mean young) infants, but to her credit, she did just win teacher of the year, and for the whole county! (But at what greater cost?) So kudos to you, my fellow teacher. Go sub, and have fun not having to take any of the work home!!! :)

  3. That sounds good.  You might actually get a lot of personal requests because you are already familiar with the district/school you want to sub in.  Good luck to you.

  4. I don't think it's strange.  I've seen a lot of teachers in our district do that very same thing and there's never been any problems.  Having a reliable, experienced substitute available who is familiar with the building and staff is fantastic.  I think you should go for it!

    Good luck!!

  5. Go for it.  Just keep in mind that you will probably be asked to sub more than you want to.  Be prepared to say no!!

  6. not at all.

In fact if I had my choice, i would request a teacher who has been at my school prior.

The only problem you may come into is how your district deals with its subs. In my district, The subs have no choice in their assignments - and further if they say no to three consecutive or ten total jobs - they are dropped from the system.

    Good luck to you!

  7. My high school principal for two years was my substitute Trig teacher the year after he retired!

  8. I don't think it's at all strange, a lot of teachers in my district do it after they retire and in 5 years when I retire I plan on subbing myself for some extra money. The folks that used to teach are the most sought after subs so you may have lots of offers. I'd be careful though about only wanting to sub a few days per month, subs are limited in many districts and I know in my district, if you sub you pretty much are expected to work most days or at least a couple of days per week. Otherwise they cut you from the list.
