Hi ! respect to all teachers, I am 10 classes short from a BA in Management at East West University in Chicago, IL. (next to the Hilton) I was wondering can I become a teacher with a BA in management? I have the choice of 3 electives what do you recommend and will they do me any good?

  1. Anyone with a college degree can go into teaching if they want to... It is a good bridge between things you really would like to be doing...

But teaching is not easy. Especially Jr. High or High School, (and, need  I add Elementary?) The  discipline sucks.. Certificaton is getting harder and for a reason: You may not be up to scratch,... not everyone is.

  2. Its hard to say -  What are some of your choices. ?  I have a BS in Health Information Management and  a BA in Elementary Education and MS in Reading and Literacy.   In Michigan at Saginaw Valley State we have an Accelerated program for people who have other degrees to get their Cert. (It takes one year) You will have to look into the state you want to teach in-  You may do adjunct instructor work at the community college - I did that with the BS while working in the Healthcare field.

With the No Child Left Behind you need to be Highly Qualified and that requires - Teacher Certification along with a BA in Education.  Take a look into to it.  Good Luck

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION-  You can get certification to work with different levels of disabilities with the students-  But make sure this is what you want.   Certification involves - (in MI) taking a Basic Skills test to be admitted in the College of Education, completing the classes for a BA in Education (either through 4 years of classwork and method courses or the Accelerated program which only involves Student teaching for a year along with Method courses)  Haveyou been to a classroom regular education as well as special education? But any class that helps with Instruction, management will help you.  Good Luck - and go visit some classrooms and try subbing during summer school.
