Question:

Teachers--I need advice. I am "caught" between two jobs...?

My dept head wants me to sign my contract for next September. I told him I had an interview with another district and asked if he would give me another week. He said yes & he didn't want to lose me (I have had good evaluations), etc.. I had the interview & it went very well (I am 1 of 2 people they are calling back for a final next week). Unfortunately, he is telling me I need to sign the contact now or give him my resignation--he doesn't want to wait another week. I understand that he also needs to do his planning. I'd like to say the "bird in hand is better than two in the bush", but the other job pays $12K more and has significantly better benefits. I hate to walk away from this opportunity BUT I don't want to be without a job either! My contract has a 30 day termination notice clause that would allow me to be released from the contract with written notice....but I feel dishonest signing it if I plan to break it if I get this other job in just a week. Any advice?

  1. I fully agree with blueeyed.  You have already been honest with your department head; he is the one pushing you.

  2. I would sign the contract if you are able to give a 30 day termination notice.

You already were upfront about interviewing with another district, so you are not being dishonest.  You are merely looking out for your best interests.  Imagine the scenario if you don't sign the contract and don't get the new job...

  3. Go ahead and sign the contract, and if you get the better job, than take it.  You are lucky there is a 30 day termination notice.  And don't feel guilty--you need to do what is best for you, not what is best for the department head.  You might regret it if ;you don't take the better job.

  4. What does your contract say about when you must commit for September??  Contact your union leaders and seek their advice.  Sounds like the dept head is worried you're going to run, and wants to secure your commitment.

  5. Just sign it. There is a chance that you might not get the other job. You look to haggle with your boss ask him what he can do to keep you. if there is nothing he can do then sign it anyways. It would be better for the town your in to keep a good teacher. Money and beneifits should not but the only motivation. chances are the kids in the system you are at will need you more. see if there is anything else you can do to for the school system to add money to you pocket.
