Teachers: Typically, how long must you work at a school before having maternity leave benefits?

I'm curious how long you have to work in a teaching position before you can take extended maternity leave and still have a job to return to when you decide to go back to work.

Thanks!

  1. by law they have to have a job for u when u come back.

    dont know about extended.

  2. Depends on the school system and the union contract.  Some contracts let an employee use built up sick days, some don't.  Most will give you extra time if you have a c-section as long as you have a doctor's note.  However, all schools need to offer you maternity leave of some type regardless of when you started.  I got pregnant my first year teaching at my current school (I've been there for 7 years now - this was not the best plan, but it happened and we were thrilled as we were just heading into fertility counseling).  I was able to take regular maternity leave.

  3. It depends on the tenure practices in your state.  I'm in Florida and here you don't get tenure until your fourth year of teaching so you would have to start your fourth year before you could take extended maternity leave.  Before that you would just have to quit and then start all over again trying to get rehired when you're ready to come back.
