Can someone please help me? My son is doing grade four (home educated) and I would like to find word lists that he should be learning for spelling? I know that for Pre - Grade 3 there are the DOLCH words but I cant find anything for his level. We have only just started home schooling and at the moment we are just revising the DOLCH words.

  2. There is a lot of good advice and many good sites listed by previous posters.

Mine is also grade 4 and I use McGuffey Speller which I got at www.Amazone.com.

You can also make your own lists from books he reads, sees or hears.

  3. Yep you can find Yr 4 spelling lists to download at:

    https://www.learningplace.com.au/deliver...  and

    http://www.pocketbasics.com/Downloads.as...

Also, there are Yr 4 spelling lists to view at:

    http://shorncliss.eq.edu.au/onlinequizce...

    http://www.wedgepark.vic.edu.au/index.as...

    Also,

    http://www.phonics.net.au/difficult-look...

    http://www.bribislass.eq.edu.au/document... -

(And, unlike other suggested sites, they are Aussie sites so give the Aussie spellings and not American ones!)

  4. Here's a list of programs. Have a look, you should find something that would be of use to you. http://homeschoolreviews.com/reviews/cur...

Or you can make note of his spelling mistakes and use them as his spelling words.

  5. Here is an entire guide to homeschooling - it links to a few dozen of the best web sites, articles, and other resources about the topic - it will tell you everything you need to know and help you find other homeschoolers for support and advice

  6. Well something that I always thought was a good idea was to have him make his own lists. Spelling and vocabulary should go hand in hand, so when he is reading a new book, have him stop every time he finds a word he doesn't immediately understand or simply never saw before and write it down. Each story or book he reads will produce it's own word list as long as the book is challenging enough for him, and you can then have him use those words as regular spelling words AND learn what they mean and how to use them in his own speach and writing.

Something else you can do to add to his spelling lists is to monitor his writing and pick out words that he consistently misspells. Have him practice these words as well as the new ones.

One last idea would be to create spelling and vocabulary lists based on specific root words, prefixes, and suffixes. This way he'll learn to spell a lot of new words, but he'll also learn about the parts that make up the word, what they mean, and how to use them to "decode" new words. Biblio, for example, is a root that is used in a lot of different words. You could make a list of all the words that use this root, go over them with him, talk about what they mean and what they have in common <all having to do with books, for example>, have him find more words that use that particular root in the dictionary, and learn to spell and use them.

I hope this helps. Good luck

  7. edhelper.com is an excellent site with word lists.  You can probably get the lists without a membership - but membership is very inexpensive, and I would strongly suggest it for any home schooling mom.

  8. Friend, there are several places to get materials for the fourth grade. I have several places listed on my web site that offer work sheets and other material for students. Some of these you can down load right to your computer. I have also done searches on Google for (free fourth grade spelling) work sheets when I tutor  children or substituted in schools. You may also want to check with ACE (link below for you convince) and see if they offer home school material where you are located. They have an excellent  spelling courses for children. Please let me know if I can be of further help. I have a web site just for parents that are home schooling and an open e-mail address if you need help. I have listed my web site below for you so you can examine some of the web sites I have for home schooling. Thank you and have a nice day.

  9. Here's a few resources for lists:

If you liked the Dolch list, you may like the 1000 Instant Words by Edward Fry. You can order the book by that title and other spelling words by grade levels from a teacher resource store or www.amazon.com
