Teachers and Phones?

Are Teachers, Police, Sports Coaches etc allowed to take your phone and search through it?

Because my phone went off in class and the teacher took it and asked who had called, I said I didn't know and then she searched through it. There could have been any old private thing on it.

  1. No, I work in a school and the phone must be handed in if lost, its your property and cannot be looked through without trouble on them

  2. not to look through it, (police are) but teachers and coaches NO!. But they  can take it from you but give it you back at the end of the losson.

  3. No mate she anit allowed to touch your phone without any evidence or any precious act from you

  4. If the school does not let you have phones at school then they can take the phone, but still they can't go though it!I think you should tell your parents and talk to them about it!

  5. If the school rule is no phone then yes they can!  Teachers are also personally allowed to confiscate a phone (school rules or not) if you take a photo of them!

  6. If there is a child protection issue then yes, if your teacher believed that your well being was at risk then it is justified. To be honest the school i work in, the boys are not allowed their phones until 4pm and they have to hand them back over night. If i were you either keep it on silent and don't check it or turn it off during the lesson!

  7. Depending on the situation, the police can indeed confiscate certain items.  But a teacher is not a police officer.  Although both are authority figures, their authority is not the same.  When you say "the teacher took it" I assume she asked for the phone and you handed it to her with little or no protest.  If this ever happens in another class, politely apologize and promise it won't happen again, but add that your parents don't allow anyone else access to the phone without their prior knowledge and approval.  Perhaps your parents can write a polite letter to the principal (with a copy to the superintendent), in addition to attending the next school board meeting to discuss this issue.  Meanwhile, make a point of keeping the phone shut off during school hours, to avoid further hassle.
