my brain is scattered b/c im so excited about this, sorry if it doesnt make much sense.

For the last week I have been motivating myself to give back to the community, only i didnt know what community I wanted to show my appreciation for. Til it hit me yesterday! TEACHERS!! b/c lets admit, teachers dedicate more then i can even imagine to students willing and not willing to learn.

I am hoping to start a group within the next few months of others who wish to give back also. I am looking to do something like award them with trips, or gifts or anything which is...What I would like to know from you. So to help set your mind to help me find suggestions here are some questions.

What do you want from us?

What are some benefits you want that are not being provided to you through your career?

What would make you feel appreciated?

What are some other plans you had in life that you have not been able to accomplish?

any and all comments/suggestions would be awesome!

thank you

  1. Teachers love free lunches- we can't go out for lunch like other professions so anytime we get a special luncheon it's a big treat.

My school does a "hot box" and teachers put in jobs for volunteers to do such as copy papers, laminate or cut things out. Many teachers prepare lessons and materials in their own time or at home :(

Teachers also buy supplies for their classrooms with their own $ often! Stickers, popsicles, indoor recess games are great gifts to give a teacher so he/she can reward their class

  2. Being a teacher is the most unappreciated job on the planet. They do the most THANKLESS work. I sure as h**l salute them for it.

They are what keeps society moving now. Good for you, planning this!

  3. As a teacher I would say that we want nothing more than to use the information we have given you in the correct way.

Do something great with your life! Do the things that we couldn't do (as an English teacher I see myself as a failed writer). It's a very nice sentiment you have, but I'd say that the greatest gift you could give to a teacher is just a little contact now and again to let them know that your life is moving in the right direction.

  4. I am a high school English/ESL teacher and, while I love my job, I think it is the hardest and most thankless job on earth. Here's what I want:

Take what we teach you and use it wisely.  Share what we give you with others - it is gift for everyone. Marvel at what you see, hear and read everyday, and see it from a new or different angle. Use it when you watch TV, go to the movies or the theatre or read a book I didn't ask you to read..

Return the pens and pencils I lent you because you forgot yours in your locker. Other students in other classes might need them, too.

On Teacher Appreciation Day (or any day really), show us that you really do care and that you listen. Say "Thank you" once in a while. Hold the door open when you see me pushing a cart-load of books along the corridor (there are doors that separate sections in my school that invariably open the wrong way when I have to use the cart) between classes. Do the homework I assign, without complaining.

Volunteer to be a teacher's aide when you see me struggling to help someone understand. Or just volunteer to help someone you know needs it when you've finished your work.

Keep the classroom clean. In my rooms, there are garbage and recycling bins. Use them, not the floor. It is a workspace the 30+ of us have to share with each other, and with other stdents and teachers.

When I say "Good morning", "Enjoy lunch" or "Have a nice week-end" or any other such greeting, I really do mean it. I'd like to hear it sometime.

Personally, I don't want trips or gifts - they're nice to get, but I'd rather have a gift certificate for a massage.

    Hope I've helped.
