Teachers in High School, Can you tell when one of your students is high during class?

Question

Teachers, Can you tell when one of your students is high from smoking pot at lunch, or smoked pot recently, but does not smell like it, and if they do not talk outloud or disrupt the class?

If you do, what actions do you take, and if you don't, what do you expect you can do about this problem?

I am a high school teacher, and yes I can tell.  Don't forget teachers are human too, we did "things" when we were kids....

No, I don't ignore it, and by law I shouldn't.  Even if the student is not being disruptive I have to address it as it is something that impedes the learning of the student (and potentially others - it may not seem like a distraction but if I am a student and I know that Jon Jones next to me is high during class I might be more compelled to watch him rather than pay attention).

The policy in our school is to send a student that we suspect is under the influence to the nurse with a hall monitor.  I would let the hall monitor know why.  I would then follow up with the student's dean (they are in charge of discipline, academics and general emotional health). I am sure the dean would get the SRO (School Resource Officer - a sanctioned police officer assigned by the town to the high school) involved.  

Later, I would chat with the student about why they made this choice.  I would give them options about how they are to be responsible for the work they missed.  Also, I would outline the consequences if they chose to do this again, one would be to contact parents/guardians.

im not a teacher,

but last year a boy in my grade was stoned, EVERYONE realised.

he was quiet as.

and usually hes loud.

he was being nice to everyone.

and usually he can be really cruel.

im not sure if the teacher noticed though....but she was a bit stupid anyway.

probably, but i think they just ignore it unless they catch them actually smoking or being disruptive

Why would you discipline a student that isn't possessing or doing an illegal drug? Who cares if the kid is high as long he isn't hurting anyone. Let him choose his path.
