  1. 1)  Do I let that student's behavior slide, or how should I address it (is it worth stopping class to address)?   I don't have enough time left in the period, so I'm going to cut "X" out.  The students seem bored/confused, so I'm going to change my lesson to _____.

    2) How to address Student X's behavior.  Is he/she the type of student who will respond better to firmness and anger, or gentleness?

How to respond to your principal's critique of your lesson; because my principal and I have tolerate/hate relationship.

Should I stop the lesson and talk about the "teachable moment", like when my student said something about how the Japanese deserved to be in a concentration camp during WW2---since I'm a science teacher, is it my job to talk about history, and if so, how do I go about teaching compassion and empathy.

What do I do for the students who just aren't getting it?  Because some students try really hard and don't get it, then there are those who don't get it and don't try to get it.

Do I call the parents of a child who is not turning in homework, or send them a letter/email?  I've heard they are hard on teachers, so I want to avoid conflict.

    3) This is my 7th year, and I still struggle with what to do about this misbehavior, or that misbehavior.  There are students I figure out right away and then we have a smooth relationship the rest of the year, and then there are those who I want to kick out of class permanently, just for chronic low-level misbehavior.  I'd like to think that my decisions are mostly effective, but I know I've made some bad decisions from time to time.  There was even once that I apologized to the class the next day for my decision to make them stop their lesson and do busy work since I was p**sed off.

    4) I think I already answered this in number 2 and 3 above.

    5) YES!!  Quite a bit.  I worry about my students; I want them to succeed, and I want them to work hard.  Whenever I make a decision that involves them, I often second-guess myself to see if there was a better way I could handle this or that.  Often, I determine that I did the best I could, but sometimes I figure out that I could have better handled it by doing _____, and so next time I try to do that.

    Hope that helps.
