  1. He shouldn't punish the whole class because of a few that did the damage. I'm glad you are having the meeting. He needs to stop doing that.

  2. Sounds like this teacher is having issues controlling his class and feels inferior so he must punish them all to show how powerful he is. Speaking openly and honestly to his superior is the best way to approach this situation. Your child's merits will show through, don't worry. Good luck

  3. This is not an appropriate punishment if it is going to cause an ISS.  This sounds like a teacher that cannot get a handle on his class and is taking out his frustrations about being inadequate on his students.  A teachers job is not to get even with his students for their misbehavior.  A teachers job is to educate.  If there are problem students then those students need to be dealt with.  If he can't control them except through punishment then they need a detention or a trip to the principals office or a call home.  However, I have had many teachers that never have to resort to any of this in their classrooms because they respect their students and in turn have the student's respect.  They keep the student's engaged in the subject matter and they make an effort to include them with active learning.

This teacher is the one that needs some attention.  He needs a refresher course on classroom management.

  4. Good luck with your meeting. The best way to get your voice heard and to see changes is by speaking out against things you don't agree with - this being one of them.

Very often, teachers will choose to 'punish' the whole class for poor behaviour to 'make an example', possibly to highlight to those who behave the worst in the class, that they will become VERY unpopular with classmates for causing this to happen with everyone! This is in the hope that they will see sense and not do this again. Its not a good strategy, I agree with what you are saying. It happened to me in my school years, I remember. Sometimes teachers clutch at straws when they are on their last nerve and really try to enforce the hardest punishment they can get away with to make a point, especially in 7th grade, 8th grade - upwards.

Tell your teacher how you feel and make your opinions known. Good luck with the result.

  5. He is being unfair and it sounds like he's just not considering the effect it will have on kids that don't deserve it. Talk to the principal about it.

Leave the fact that he doesn't have kids out of it. It's not pertinent to the situation. He's still got the same degree as the ones that do have kids at home.

  6. If the teacher cannot figure out who is causing the mischief (the class won't say so, which is a further disruption), the teacher has every right to punish all of them (especially if they are forewarned).

He isn't keeping them after class to get them suspended. He's keeping them after class because that is his disciplinary procedure. If you don't want to get kept after class, don't act up. It's just that simple.

Many times, teachers cannot record grades higher than 100% (if they grade by points or percents). It's an A either way, the GPA will be the same.

If you need a meeting with the principal because you don't like this, I'm sorry but you really need to get over it. I'm 17 and a junior in high school and I HATE it when parents do this.

  7. I don't have a problem with punishing the whole class. However, the punishment this teacher is inappropriate and disrepectful to his fellow teachers.
