Question:

Teachers with guns - what next?

A small town in Texas is allowing it's teachers to carry handguns to school this fall term. Does anyone else have a problem with turning our schools into armed camps for our children to attend? What qualifications does a teacher have that would warrant them to carry loaded guns around our children.

  1. Reinforced security personnel far outweighs teachers with hand guns.  Bec teachers have no physical or mental training and responsibilities for the communities.  Taxes are paid for them to teach and not protect.  I would suggest double the security - both in personnel and in technology to make a safer learning environment for our children.

  2. Wow

this cannot be tolerated. Some serious actions should be taken because it is a school and in schools children misbehaves and if a small accident occurs it would cost a persons life

  3. Your child is in a school one day where there is an armed gunman going around shooting kids.  Question: at that moment would you want your child's teacher to be armed, or have them cowering in a corner of a room?

Qualifications?  At one school I worked at the head of security was in the Army Reserve and had been to Iraq, but he isn't allowed to carry a gun either.  Go figure.

  4. This is such a knee jerk reaction to the fear the media creates for ratings. While the shooting incidents in the past 15 years are tragic, statistically, school is one of the safest places for children. They are much more likely to be injured or killed walking or driving to and from school or at home than in school.

  5. So what happens when a teacher snaps and starts threatening a misbehaving student with the gun? What happens if that gun gets into the hands of a student? This is a horrible idea.

  6. Allowing teachers to possess firearms on their person is not something I look forward to hearing about.

    Why:

    1) Police officers are trained to carry guns and occasionally even they use them inappropriately.

    2) Nearly every teacher has been push towards their limit or will be at some point in their career.  I would hate to see a firearm be at the ready when this occurs.

    3) Having only a single human to prevent the gun from getting into the hands of students...I sure hope the guns the teachers are carrying have biometric activation switches on them to prevent unauthorized use.

I do think the principal's office should have a firearm in a safe that special trained staff have access to.  Once again a biometric security system (fingerprint or retinal scan) should be the only way to open the safe.

  7. I think that's wonderful. They should adopt the same laws in many more cities.
