Teaching Credential - Does it matter where?

Hello, I am curious to know if it matters where you get your teaching credential. I am thinking about becoming a High School teacher, and am looking into the basics.

Does it matter if you get your certification at Standford compared to your normal state college?

  1. As a teacher in Metro Nashville area, I can only encourage you to get your certification from a state school which supports your hard work.   I attended school in Michigan and was originally certified and credentialed there.  I taught for four years and then persued another career in music and performance.  After 10 years, I decided to return to teaching and because my state was so strong, I was able to apply and get a position almost immediately!  I had a strong background and foundation and thank God the position that I wanted (Language Arts in Middle School) was open for me.  I was also blessed because my experience had incorporated music (playing piano and organ, singing) and I could also teach it.  I had drama and speech for background as well.  Additionally, I worked in the business world as as Repo and Remarketing Specialist in the Auto Industry and was a Human Resourse Manager for several years.  I believe th e statement "I was a Jack of all trades" - and I did master them all and they all served me well so that when I intervied for an Arts Magnet School the principal felt she was getting a gem!  I have been at my position as a teacher for 6 years and am now the Department Head /Team Leader for the 8th Grade.  I love what I do and I am so thankful that the experiences I had helped to mold me.  It also helped th at I was a little older and settled and the kids can't rattle me.  I knew how to manage a classroom.  Get that degree from an accredited college - stay away from online unless the attachment is to a standard college.    Online degrees are not always looked upon as the way to go when you first start out - it's applicable when you might be 'returning' to school.  Best wishes to you. I hope this has helped.

  2. Certainly a degree from Stanford will help you get that initial job.

however once you have found a position, it no longer matters. and you *will* find a position.

One thing that does matter is state credentialing - you can teach in the state you are credentialed for. If you move, you'll need to requalify.

  3. It matters only with the potential employer. I, for one,  would hire a Stanford graduate over a University of Phoenix graduate any day of the week.  I would also choose a Cal State graduate over a U. of Phoenix one.  Online schools in general are shunned upon in education.

  4. I think it matters.  If you receive your degree or certification from a school known as strong in education, your resume will catch the eye of any principal examining it.    If you get a degree, for example, online, I would be very cautious about hiring you and would probably pass you by for someone who went in person to a college or university.
