Question:

Teaching Degree?

I just graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Psychology. However, I've always really wanted to be a teacher. If I were to go back to school and pursue a teaching degree, what steps would I need to take. Would I need a Bachelors in Education? Or could I get a masters degree in education? Do I need to have a bachelors degree before I get a masters? I'm really confused on what the necessary steps are.

Thanks!

  1. you would have to complete the state requirements on the undergrad level for certification, they may not require you to get another BA but you will ned the core classes, another requirement will be the student teaching portion of your undergrad credits, that can usually only be set up by a college with an ed. program...many states have extension or completion programs that allow you to apply credits from another degree towards your teaching cert. but there are many classes you would be missing with a BA in psych...your best bet may be to pursue a master's in school psych or counseling...

  2. I have a teaching degree; when I was in undergrad, there were several Master's candidates taking the very same classes as me.  They had undergrad degrees in other fields.  Basically, they entered the professional education portion of my program with me (the last 2-3 years of my Bachelor's degree program).  They had to take all the methods classes and student teaching as well.  The only difference was that they were signed up for the graduate level of the same class (they usually had an extra assignment or two) and they graduated with a Master's & a teaching license.

If you really want to teach, go for it; if you're not sure, check into a School Psych masters.  You'll get paid a ton more & there's more demand (at least in the Midwest).

Call your local university education department & I'm sure they'll give you all the info you need -

    Good luck!
