Teaching Drum Outdoor School?

im really interested in this program. looked at the website for a while and i dont know what all happens there. what is allowed not alowed. please help me. if you stayed there or still stay there can you tell me how your life was there

My exhusband and two sons (now 23 and 24) spent much time at the Teaching Drum, beginning around 1994. My older son was the youngest person to complete their solo canoe course at age 14. It is definitely living off the land using old way skills, with very little augmentation from outside sources. To complete the year long program requires much determination, commitment, and shedding of urban skills, but the rewards are great, both in survival/living skills learned, and spiritual growth that results from living in harmony with the land AND the others in the program. Personal dynamics and cooperation are very important in the groups.

I never participated in the programs but my ex (with whom I remained very close) found much peace and enjoyment there over the years, even though day-to-day living can be a struggle for someone used to a modern lifestyle. My sons and I just returned from a trip there last week for a memorial for their dad, who died last fall. My younger son stayed for a full week to take part in a sweat for his father's spirit. I'd suggest you phone the school and ask your questions of them directly--I always prefer to hear a voice than rely on email for communications of this kind. If a short trip is possible for you, talk to them about a shorter visit (they have one month and three month programs). Possibly an even shorter visit can be arranged so you can judge for yourself if it's right for you.
