I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some detailed information on teaching English as a foreign language. I am an Australian resident and have a Bachelors degree (not a teaching degree) and am wondering what the best companies and the best opportunities are for teaching English overseas. If anyone could help me that would be great!!

  1. Buy Oxford, Cambridge, Longman or Express Publishing books. They are just great for it!

  2. Go to www.daveseslcafe.com, you'll find all the jobs, anywhere including forums where teachers discuss their companies and opportunities.  You do need an EFL certificate of some kind DELTA CELTA.  That will better increase your chances of getting a job.  The Middle East is a fine place.  I couldn't tell you about others as I've not worked there.  Take a look at the above site.  All TEFLers are on that site.  Good luck.

post it in Education & Reference--Teaching

  4. Like the other comment http://eslcafe.com is great.  However, it does not apply to all countries.  Also many teachers, myself included, believe that working with a recruiter is not always the best answer, but actually depends on where you want to go.  Some questions to answer:

What country would you like to go?

Is money your primary reason, or travel and adventure... experience...??

    Do you have TESOL/TEFL/CELTA... qualifications?

Do you want to teach children or adults...?

I recommend making a priority list first.  After that you can choose the appropriate actions.

If travel is your priority and money is not a requirement: try Europe or South America or China/S. East Asia.  However, if money is a priority, try South Korea, Saudi Arabia or Japan.  Do some research and compare what matches your qualification and needs.

Some countries require more than just a Bachelor for a good job (Mid East countries).  Some countries it is recommended to avoid recruiters and find schools privately.  Some countries it is almost required to work through a recruiter.

Your question is very big, you should try to narrow your question a bit then take the next step.  However, just to get some ideas of what is going on, put out your resume on http://eslcafe.com and see what options you have.  But remember, not all countries advertise on that site.

After you choose a country, you can ask other questions here or you can join a forum on ESL Cafe or find other forums.

    Good luck

  5. I am an ESL teacher and am familiar with a training program that is well respected overseas:  School for International Training. Try googling them and check it out!  Really good training.   They offer 1 or 2 month intensive training certificate programs and teach them in other countries as well (I live in the U.S.)  Many universities also offer a post-Bachelor TEFL/TESL program.  I have both a university and SIT cert., but I think you could work overseas with the SIT one, depending on your background.  Good luck!   =)
