What type of degree would I need to teach English to Italian kids? I know you would have to learn to speak Italian, but what else would I need? Also, if you have any teaching tips can you please tell me. Thank you!

  1. WHERE you teach may make your requirement different, but if you want to know ONLY about the degree, then you need a B.A. as a minimum.  If you are teaching in Italy, you have specific requirements that they will insist on, such as TESL certification, and a work visa.  If you are teaching in the USA, and doing it privately, you might get away without having a certificate, but its best to have it.  The actual degree "could" be in any field, but if you know a bit of Italian, makes the job easier, but not actually a requirement.

Find out the level and try to separate the learners based on their skills, and use all resources available, such as Internet.  Try to converse and if possible do field trips and talk about the situation you are in.  Play spelling games with them also.

  2. One thing to keep in mind - if you are American, it is usually very, very hard to get a job within the European Union. Because of official policies, Americans can normally only get jobs that no citizen of those countries is able to fill. This makes it tough for American ESL teachers because there are many qualified people in Britain who get first consideration.

If you want to teach ESL, I'd suggest looking into other countries. Asia has the most opportunities for Americans. If you are dying to go to Italy, try teaching American kids at one of the Dept of Defense's schools. Here's some more info: http://www.dodea.edu/offices/hr/onlineap...

To have the best chances of getting an ESL teaching job, get your degree in education focusing on teaching ESL. You don't need teacher certification for most jobs abroad, but it will help you very much with becoming a better teacher.

  3. It may not be necessary to know Italian to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language) -- though it wouldn't hurt.

Your best bet is to look into a degree (usually a BS/BA or MEd) in TESOL (Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Google things like "ESL teaching Italy" or "TESOL" -- that should give you some leads.

    Good luck!
