Teaching Latin in the UK...?

Question

I am currently still a student, but I dream to be a Latin teacher soon, so I wonder... is Latin taught in UK schools? What type of schools include it in their syllabus? At what level is it taught? Is there a national curriculum for this subject? If there is, where can I find it online to see what it contains?

I'll apreciate any relevant pieces of information, including useful links! Thank you! :)

PS: And no, of course I don't live in the UK, otherwise I would know these things! :))

Hi there.

Latin is still taught in the UK, but in very few schools. It is taught in mainly independant schools, boarding schools, and  grammar schools. It is taught at GCSE and A Level and is usually taken alongsde or intergrated into classics as a subject.

There is no national curriculum for this subject but OCR (an exam board) have some useful information on their website.

Other exam boards have a different GCSE/ A Level syllabus.

My Form Tutor taught Latin at Sackville Comprehensive School in East Grinstead, West Sussex ! She did this Part-Time & this was after I had left School back on Wednesday P.M. 30th June 1982 !

There is a teacher shortage in the UK in Latin, which is steadily getting worse.
