  2. Hi Lisa!

That's a challenge and congratulations for attempting it.  This is no easy route at all, and near impossible in most peoples views.  It's obvious that you would gain more quicker by visiting a club.  It's advisable also to visit training areas from time to time on your martial art voyage.  Some things you can do on your own, that's for sure...but you need to train with a few people, perhaps some friends or someone at work or wherever who would help you out in your own discoveries.

Your question is not asking people their own views on what you are doing, but just to know if they're are websites with free information that could help you on your 'way'.  The answer is yes, and it will take a great deal of web-surfing and commiting to try things out and here's some advice; find someone to train with and test your knowledge constantly.  I personally don't think what you intend to do is impossible (not that you're asking my view on that) but I understand why people have answered the way they have to this question.  And at some point it will become clear to you...the point they are trying to make; You need to train with people is their message.  You cannot train-in and about something that you don't experience firsthand, meaning you are learning about people, so you have to train with people.  Observation only goes so far...direct contact is needed.

Websites can only offer information like any material you find.  The teaching part will have to come from your own mind (like everything) because it's what you do with it and how you apply yourself that is what will make the difference.

Feel free to start with my site as I think that knowledge should be shared: www.internalgate.co.uk

And here's a link to the preview of my book that is currently in production (if you're interested):

  3. it would be better if you at least learn your basics in a dojo. do you know what type of martial art you want to learn? tai chi aikido kendo wing tsun karate and what type of karate shito-ryu shotokan wado-ryu goju-ryu etc etc the list gos on and on. my friend. my advice would be to read up and see whats in your area.

  4. these days everyone will try to sell you an online video claiming you can learn martial arts at home, but the fact is this training is below second rate and these videos etc should be used as a reference/research only.

do not expect to learn the intricacies of a martial art based on watching a 1 hour video. this can only be done with the hands on instruction of a qualified instructor.

sorry but you will probably end up just ingraining bad habits. and creating a false sense of security.

  5. First, you can not learn martial arts on your own regardless of videos, books or whatever. There is much more to it than just learning some moves or skills.

Second, you should never be afraid to visit clubs and check them out. You may actually find a good one that fits your needs and reasons for wanting to learn.

Last, in my 30 years of training and 18 years of teaching I have meet hundreds of "self trained" people who only harmed themselves with what they thought they had learned. It is very scary for me to think that people out there actually believe that what they see on TV is real martial arts (UFC, Power Rangers, etc). Figure out what your reasons to learn are, visit local schools, find a true and authentic dojo that matches what you are looking for and have a good time. Forget about the hype around home training...it is a waste of time and money, not to mention a serious risk to your life if you are ever truly attacked.

  6. no point even trying. you wont learn much from a videos and books you could read 20 books about martial arts and learn all the techniques in all of them but chances are somoen after a month of Martial arts trainign in a dojo will beat the c**p through you.

also if you are not willing to go to a dojo to train you are not really willing to train anyway so you will probably give up shortly after starting.

if you want to learn martial arts actually go learn martial arts properly.

  7. A quote for you to think about: "He who is taught only by himself has a fool for a master."~ Ben Jonson

In addition to everyone else's answers (I agree with most of the posts), martial arts is not just about fighting.  It is a way of life that focuses on improving your physical control, internal control, and your spirit (or way of thinking).

I do not recommend learning a style on your own.  You need a qualified instructor who can teach you the proper technique and basic movements.  Once you learn a few of those, then practice on your own.

  8. I am not discouraging you, in fact I congratulate you on having an interest.  But take heed, martial arts not used properly can in fact impede your ability to fight.  If you teach yourself the martial arts in a WRONG way, it can in fact make you fight worse.  Good luck!

  9. Better not try to learn on your own. As you cannot learn properly without face to face professional instruction. The risk of damaging joints, tendons and muscles is very high if you don't know what your doing.

  10. There are many.

That being said I have to advise against this if you do not have any background in martial arts training. There is no substitute for a competent and qualified instructor who is able to provide feedback in order for you to excel.

Nearly all DIY black belt programs recommend their program as a compliment to formal training. Those that do not care even less for your training and well being, practicing martial arts incorrectly can severely damage joints.

Before you completely abandon the thought of going to a club, at least visit a couple and participate in classes. Do not let the instructors pressure you into signing anything, but take advantage of your opportunity to get a feel for the club.

Good luck with your training and remember safe practices.
