Question:

Teaching Qualification for South Africa?

I have completed a Bachelor of Arts Honours through UKZN in 2002, and then moved to Japan where I have been teaching in a public school for 3 years. I am wondering which qualification I need (preferably through a distance learning program) to be able to teach back home, and where it would be best to get it from.

  1. The proper course to do would be a B Ed or Bachelor of Education.

However, there is a severe shortage of teachers in some places and many schools take on teachers with any degree, even if not in teaching, provided that they are studying towards the proper qualification.

I know a couple of people with degrees in law and journalism and no teaching qualification at all who are teaching at local high schools.

  2. My sister has been doing "improvements" to her qualifications through Unisa.  She is now doing her masters. My brother also first studies agriculture, and then decided that teaching was his calling, and studied through Unisa and has been teaching for more than 25 years.  The qualifications are recognised in South Africa.

*Edit*  My brother had a BSc. and he just had to do a year extra at Unisa to do the "teaching" part to complete his qualifications.  Unisa is a distance learning university, a very good university.

  3. SA is the worst when it comes to teaching qualification. My step mom did a 2 year TEFEL course that makes her a qualified english teacher in the UK the EU and Middle and Far East but SA says she cant teach there.

  4. You should do either a Higher diploma in Education or a post graduate certificate in Education. Both would qualify you too teach. Try UNISA for distance education.
