  2. Don't worry about whether or not you'll be able to get a job teaching students with special needs - it is one area that keeps growing and where teachers are in great demand, the demand is so great that in some States you can earn your degree while you teach (bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for this).

Special Education is a broad field.  Do you know which area you want to specialize (learning disabled, physically disabled, severely mentally disabled, Autism, Asperger, Behaviorally Challenged, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired...)? The school you want may depend on the area you would like to specialize.

Top rated SpEd programs are: Peabody School at Vanderbilt University (terrific broad program.  U of Tennessee (Knoxville) has an okay program - excellent hearing impaired program.

University of Virginia has been recognized as a leader in special education studies for the past thirty years.

UC Chappel Hill has an excellent program for those specializing in working with mentally disabled and Autism spectrum.

If you want to travel a bit, check out University of Kansas' program.

  3. You should be able to find the program at most public colleges.  In NC, UNC- Greensboro and East Carolina come to mind as the more respected programs for putting out excellent teachers.  If you want something more along the TN  border,  check out Applachian State, too.

When you look into Special Ed programs, look at what kind of licenses they can award and how they fit with your career goals.  Do you want to work with mental retardation (think Special Olympics athletes and those less abled)?  More intriguied teaching those with dyslexia?  How about those who are deaf? Visually impaired?  Physical education to those with significant learning or motor issues (adaptive physical education)?    These are all different licensure options and not all colleges award them.  Check this important piece of information out!

Best wishes and take comfort in knowing you'll have a job offer.  Do take college class attendance and appearance important, especially in education coursework.  They are excellent references.  If you come in looking as if you are on your way to a club or straggle in fifteen late regularly, then they will not serve you well as a character reference.
