Question:

Teaching a 5 gaited horse to trot?

Okay, so i have this 4 year old mare. when i bought her i was told she was not gaited. (please note i have had her since she was 2). now what i have trained her to ride i realized she paces. but i would like to compete in dressage, show jumping, and english classes. when i lunge her she has a beautiful trot. and doesnt pace. but when i get on her she paces unless i sit deep in my seat. urge on with my legs and give her rein. but in my english classes i must post. how do i keep her into a trot.? and how do i get her to not pace?

  2. I noticed that you had no answers yet,so I thought that I would have a go at your ?. I think you need a new horse if you will be competing.Sell your current horse to someone who just wants a nice comfortable riding or trail horse. It might be difficult to encourage the trot and retrain the horse. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

  3. Trot is a natural gait.  Cues and signals are what need work.  Practice in a deep small ring or round pen.  Time and patience are essential.  Consult with an experienced saddlebred or standardbred trainer for potential hints and suggestions.

    Ground driving is another approach to correcting cues.
