If I want to teach at a community college will a Bachelors degree suffice or do I need a Masters degree? Next question, do I have to have certification to teach (like school teachers do). Am I able to teach in my field (Business Administration) without the need for additional certification.

What are the job prospects like for teaching (grading papers, etc) at an online college? and what is the pay like?

  1. it depends on your state.  but to be a full professor at a community college you will need your masters.  you could be adjunct if you only have a bachelors.  you will need certification to teach at the elementary or highschool level even if it is in your field.

not sure abouton linee colleges or the pay

  2. Community college--yes, you'll need at least a master's degree.  You do not need a teaching certificate to teach at a community college.  The reason that sometimes school teachers end up teaching at a community college is the pay is better and they do have their master's degree's.  You would be able to teach in business administration at the community college level.  You could pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration and get your master's in education to get a teaching certificate for high school certification to teach business and accounting classes.  Then, eventually, you could also teach at the community college level because you do have your master's, so both options are open....

The pay is about $45,000 per year to start.

  3. Teaching credentials are for k-12 teaching.

At the college level it is your degrees that matter. All colleges want PhD's. You can find lecturer or adjunct faculty at *some* schools where simply a masters is needed - but for the most part - you need a Doctorate - yes even at community colleges.

    Here is a typical listing:

As far as online colleges - the requirements would be the same.

You need to set your sites higher.

  4. I'm in the same shoe.   A BA degree will work when you're teaching a community college, AND a 4 year uni... the only differences are:  If you only have a BA/BS when you're teaching a 4 year uni, you're less likely to be fully compensated (ie. benefites, hours, pay, etc...), AND, you will be only hired as an adjunct/temp instead of a full time with full benefits.  However, if you're teaching in a comm.college, a BA and above will suffice.   The department usually wants a Master, but when there's slim pickings of the candidates, a BA will do.

If you want to teach in CA (I'm in CA), in any level below college (K~12), you'll need to get your teaching credential.  (aside from your BA/BS)

Job prospects ranges greatly depending on:  what subject you teach, what level you teach at, how involved you want to be.

The pay ranges too pending on area.   North and southern CA will differ by as much as $7,500/month for K~12 teachers.  Of course more for professors.  that's due to the commute and the availability of teachers.  If they really want/need you, they'll pay top dollars.

    good luck

PS.  I would suggest you talk to your local school to find out the pay schedules, and maybe talk to some of the instructors to find more details into teaching life.
