Question:

Teaching degree in Wisconsin, if I already have my Bachelors?

I graduated a couple years ago with a BS - Psychology. Now I'm thinking about wanting to teach. I've been trying to look at UW schools' websites to get info, but they aren't to helpful to someone in my situation.

My main question is, how LONG (semesters) would it take me to get my teaching certification.

I was kind of thinking about going with a broad field science major, since I already have so many classes done.

How about the difference in time and course load between a Secondary Education broad field and an Elementary Ed major?

If someone could provide any links to UW school pages with info, I'd appreciate that too. Thanks!

  1. You should try to speak with an advisor from the Department of Education at the University that you are trying to attend.  They will be able to give you some insight on the classes you will need to take and which classes will transfer with your current degree.

  2. I'm in the education department at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee as an Elementary Ed major (actually here its called middle childhood through adolescence) which is certification for 1st-8th grade.  Here is the SOE website that has links to the program requirements: http://www4.uwm.edu/soe/departments/curr...

The second link has all of the requirement for someone who already has a bachelors degree and wants to get their teaching degree in Wisconsin.

This is the website for 6th-9th grade certification in science. http://www4.uwm.edu/soe/departments/curr...  In the top right hand corner there is a link for a post-baccalaureate certification application and below that if you click on the coursework and program requirements link you can find the post-baccalaureate science education program sheet with everything you should need.

It would be best to call an advisor and talk with them because they would be able to really answer all of your questions!  Here is the school of education contact info page: http://www4.uwm.edu/soe/departments/curr...  Hope I helped!
