Okay so I'm a senior this year and I know I want to go into education I just don't know at what level. I either want to teach high school or college. I know for sure I want to teach history or something social studies related. If I choose to teach high school I would just get my bachelors degree in secondary education with a focus on social studies. If I choose college I would get my masters degree in history. What do you think would be a better choice? And also what are the pros and cons of teaching at both a highschool and college level?

  1. I think that you should start off teaching high school simply because after you complete your bachelor's degree in education it is only right to start teaching. Teaching high school first will allow you to work while you pursue your Master's degree in History. This work experience is important to make the next step which is to become a college professors. It also depends on the college because most universities like to hire professors with doctoral degrees unless you work part-time. Since you're just a senior, you have at least two for three semesters before you really get into your major coursework, so consult with you academic advisers in college and your college professors. good luck!

  2. Here's the thing . . . you have TIME to make this choice, and there is one path that can lead to both places.

Start out majoring in education (Secondary with a major in History).  In doing this, you'll be required to spend time in the classroom, which will help you to decide if that's for you.  If, then, you decide you want to teach college, I'm afraid you're in for more than just a masters.  You'll need a doctorate (and you first need a Bachelor's before pursuing either a masters or doc.).

Basically, you need a bachelor's no matter what you decide, so why not prepare for the possibility of teaching high school?  I am a new teacher, and struggled with the same predicament, but quickly learned that it's far too rewarding in the secondary classroom to move on to University.

Lastly, I'm afraid the pros and cons will be different for everyone.  You really just need to try it out.  Just remember, you've got time to make this choice; don't rush yourself.

  3. I would think that college teachers have to put up with less garbage than high school teachers in terms of behavior, obnoxious parents, obnoxious students, etc.
