Question:

Teaching in the UK?

I'm due to start a degree in Pharmacology this September. I've been thinking about teaching in a Primary School lately though. Instead of Pharmacology, what degree would be better for me to study to be able to possibly teach Primary 3 or 4?

  1. Change to BEd or do something you're really into but apply for a PGCE as a post graduate course..it'll mean 4 years but if you really want to do it, it's the only way. I'm applying for a PGCE Primary course next year. Good Luck.

  2. If you do a PGCE Primary at the end of the degree you will be able to work in pharmacology or teaching.

With a science type degree you will easily be able to do a PGCE.

Do a B.Ed now and you will be stuck with teaching- bear in mind 50% of teachers give it up within FIVE years.

  3. Why do you want to teach? My advice would be don't do it!  DO you want a life?  If so, do your pharmacology and forget teaching.  Do you want to spend your days being run ragged, your nights lying awake worrying about the next days teaching, your holidays either preparing school work or feeling guilty because you are not? Then go into teaching.

Why don't you see if you can do some voluntary work as classroom helper in a local primary so you can see what goes on+ talk to teachers!!

  4. A BEd would be ideal.

However you can still do your degree in Pharmacology and then do a PGCE (primary) after you have completed your Pharmacology degree.

I recommend you do your degree then a primary PGCE because it seems you have only just decided you'd like to be a teacher.

If you choose to do the BEd and when you are teaching decide it isn't 100% for you, you will have to go back to University and do another course for 3 years.
