Question:

Teaching looking to tutor?

by  |  earlier

I taught elementary school for seven years before becoming a stay at home mom. I have a California credential. What can I do to start up a little tutoring business? Any ideas/tips? Anyone with experience in this?

When I say a little tutoring business I'm talking a few hours a week, meeting at the library, pretty informal.

I'd appreciate any advice, thanks!!!!

  1. If you have kids that are school aged you can start by maybe announcing at PTA meetings that you will tutor some students or even if they are not school aged go to the neighborhood school.  Or you can research on the web some companys that will find you people to tutor and pay you (you would work for them) and then once that goes ok then perhaps you can then branch off and not work for that company anymore and do your own thing.  Good luck!!

  2. Teach  your friend's or neighbour's child, free, without any fees.In the final exam.,when the child will pass with flying colours, many students will approach you for tutions the next year.

  3. I also was a teacher in CA until having children.  I then started tutoring once my own kids were in school.  I gave my name and a business card to the school secretary and also to my children's teachers.  I would not tutor for free.  Your time is valuable, you will most likely be tutoring after school (mine came to my house), which is time away from your own children.  I was paid from $30-$50 an hour.  I very seldom lacked for students.  Word of mouth is the best advertisement.  I offered to meet with the child's teacher if the parent wanted, I purchased work books and even was asked to attend IEP meetings.  I did do these without reimbursement.

...Just my opinion... I have loved tutoring and have some students who are now in HS that I am still tutoring their younger siblings (9 years with the same family, all of their children).  Great relationships can be built.  Good Luck to you...

And... you will not regret staying home with your children.  Keep up the good work
