Teaching material VS teaching materials?

What is the difference between saying "teaching material' and ' teaching materials' with an s.

Teaching the material means teaching the subject matter, core content, etc.

Teaching materials are the resources you use to teach that subject matter.

Let me say how I use the terms.  I used to teach special education on the secondary level, and I had individual educational plans for each student, so this consisted in teaching material (for that student), therefore, as I had 15 to 18 students, I had a lot of teaching "materials".  Hope this helps.  Good luck.
