I'm a teacher, out of school for the summer and I have decided I would like to teach music (because I love music and the extra income would help me pay for my studies). The only problem is, that I don't feel comfortable having people in my house, or going to their houses. I am at the end of my rope because I can't figure out a place where I could teach them, without renting a studio which is really expensive. I want to do it in a professional manner but I have a hard time trusting people. What is a good solution? If you can help me I will be so grateful!!!

  1. As above you could try a church hall! But there are MANY advantages to teaching at home! I love it! There are tax advantages as well as convenience and time! You are also able to set up your studio how you like! There are many ways to be professional at home! Its all about dress and behaviour!

  2. Well, I've been teaching Piano lessons for about 2 years now.  I've had the privelage to teach at my students house on their own piano.  I enjoy it that way because it's more comfortable for the parents and student to be in their own atmosphere to learn something new with, technically, a stranger.  If you don't like people in your house, then I'd suggest teaching in their house.  Also, a lot of local music stores/academy's love having new people that can teach.  Some require a degree and experience  but other's allow help and will pay you for the time you spend there.  That part involves research.  I hope this helps you out! :)

  3. I've done this for years, I wasn't always happy with having people in my home either.....all I can suggest is to make sure that when you do have a student make sure that someones always in the house with you !!!!!! Fix up a section of your basement for this purpose. I've also went to people homes, if you feel uncomfortable with people in your home do this.....I know with the price of gas that this could be difficult, so make sure that you have students that are in your area....Good luck to you, I've had a lot of fun doing this, you get a lot of laughs.....one ten year old begged me to let him watch cartoons instead of taking lessons.....I tryed to tell his Mother that she was wasting her money but she still insisted that he keep on trying, well he only lasted another ten months.....he hated it so much he even use to cry !!!!!! We called him Howdy Doody because he had very red hair and tons of freckles !!!!!! Another student came with a Zeppelin book thinking that when he left he would be playing Stairway to Heaven.....( he never played a thing on guitar before ), boy was he suprized, he left here with a puzzled look on his face, I never did see him again.....he was one of those kids with a high IQ so he thought that he woundn't have any trouble learning how to play !!!!!!!!!! Years later when he was in college he told me that he never did pick up the guitar again !!! I have tons of other funny stories, but I don't want to bore you, but teaching is lots of fun.....especially when you have students who do succeed !!!!!!!!

  4. Hi Miss Teacher...

    Saludos...

  5. I assume that you are NOT a music teacher during the school year - this is NOT your area of certification?  So - ask your colleagues how THEY do this.  They would be a good source of student referrals, too.  If you want to teach in neutral territory, then you either have to rent or barter space.  You could ask your CHURCH is they would let you use facilities - and perhaps you could provide music for them in return.  I have taught lessons in my home since 1973, and have an incorporated business to do so - I take advantage of the tax breaks, etc.  This sound like MORE than what you want - so see if someone can advise you locally, or even SHARE their studio.

Nowhere do you say WHAT in music you wish to teach.  Are you a piano teacher, vocal teacher, etc?   This will help us refine our answers.
