I started teaching myself to crochet the problem is that all my patterns turn into a round. I tried all the books to understand but something is not clicking. I was trying to make a blanket but yet again its a round. I have crocheting of dummies but while reading I just find myself being more confused. I'm just doing this to get rid of stress. Please help. its more work then relaxing.

  1. I am self taught and will help you as much as I can.

First it sounds like you need to learn to go back and forth.  I am going to assume you are doing the single crochet stitch which is where most people start. At the end of the row, chain one (this is called your turning chain) and turn your work around and than crochet back across, chain one and turn again.

I purchased an interactive CD from Joann Fabrics called Crochet Made Easy that is put out by Red Heart which is Coats and Clarks. It is $6.99. If you go online to their website, you can print out a 40% off coupon to use with your purchase.

When learning to crochet, use a larger hook. The experts usually recommend a size G hook but I found it much easier to learn with a size J hook. They loops were bigger and easier to see. Also, use a light colored yarn. The blacks, navy's, browns, greys and dark greens are harder to see the stitches in. Try a light pink or yellow or a lighte shade of any color.

Use an inexpensive yarn and try to pick up a couple of colors if you can. I find the Red Heart to be very perfect for learning with. Crochet does not have to be expensive. You do not need to buy all of the fancy yarns that are on the market.

Try your local Home Extension office and they can stear you twoards someone that crochets. They also have different publications that can be purchased for the price of a copy.

How about your local Senior Center? There is bound to be a Senior Citizen in your area that crochets or has crocheted that would be willing to teach you. Who knows, you may find a new friend.

What about your local librarian? She will know of different books available for check out and which ones are more popular to be loaned either from your library or an inter-library loan.

Who is the local High School Home Ec teacher? He or she probably knows how to crochet and is used to teaching others.

What about a local yarn shop? Sometimes they have lessons or have open learning hours where people just go and sit and crochet. I have found most people who crochet are more than will to help. Igot help in the Emergency Room one day while I was in the waiting room. You never know when you will run into someone who crochets. Keep a hook in your purse or car with some yarn just to kill time with if nothing else.

Good luck with your endeavor. Keep working at it and you will get it. Crochet is very relaxing. I have really lowered my blood pressure just by crocheting. It was challenging at first but once I started figuring it out, it got easier. Again, the CD is what worked best for me. Great instrcutions and video qualilty is fabulous. She walks and talks you through it and there are a fed projects at the end of the CD.
