I went to the college and signed up for classes. At the time I wanted to go into social work. She showed me that physchology and social work classes are about the same.Im taking pshycology 1 in Aug. BUT now that i think of it if i I want to do elementry teaching (it will take just as much time to complete as social work would) .... so my question is, does elementry teaching require a lot of pyschology classes if i later change my mind again? because if so, ill change my major later on.

  1. Like above posters have said, the required classes really don't overlap (except maybe one or two).  Talk to your career counselor and ask to speak to the education advisor to find out what courses are involved in completing the program.  Usually freshman year is time for some basic entry-level courses.  Can you take a couple of psychology/social work and a couple of basic education courses?  You could also try volunteering with a tutoring program or some sort of other volunteer program that works with young kids.

  2. unfortunately education does not require many psych classes. if you are still undecided, the only courses that might overlap are psychology of adolescence, child psychology, psychology of disabilities etc. also psychology of human learning should count for both.

  3. First off who ever told you that psychology and social work classes were about the same did not have a clue - There may be one course (usually called Human Behavior) that would be similar - social work usually required intro to psychology as a prerequisite.

Teaching and psychology would be very different.  You might take a few psych courses as elective (intro and a child development course.

    DA

  4. Elementary teaching a s a major does not require a lot of psychology classes (though it depends on your program, if you have a registrar online they should list the required courses for the major) though some schools require you to choose a major like psychology because elementary education is a program not a major, it all depends on your school. That being said, as a former elementary teacher and current middle school teacher i can honestly say you will use what you learn in your social work and psychology classes every day! The more you know about how people work and interact the more effective you will be as a teacher, so my suggestion would be a double major (or minor) Good Luck!!!
