Question:

Teaching positions?

Since March I have applied to 28 different school districts and charter schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, along with a few in Houston.

I'm certified to teach Social Studies grades 4-8.

I've also called up several times at several of the school districts and they have assured me they are still hiring people. But this is July 5 and the new school year starts towards the end of next month. I don't think they'll be calling me. They've haven't at this point.

Any advice on what I should do?

  1. 4-6 grade shouldn't you be certified to teach EVERYTHING. i know in high school you can major and be a specific subject teacher (science teacher, math teacher, etc) but in 4-6 you gotta teach english math and science too.

ummmm there might not be positions open. I'd substitue teach and see how many old teachers there are so you can gauge which schools will have openings soon (based on retirement)

  2. Try not to get too anxious.  I was not hired until the week before school started.  The other day on Yahoo answers someone asked if you were a teacher, when where you hired.  The majority of answers said August or just a few days before school started.  I don't know why districts do it that way, but they all seem to.  Don't give up just yet.

  3. Here is why schools wait:

first reason - Often leaving teachers wait untill the last minute to inform their schools - they do this in fear their new position might close.

second reason - administrators want to be sure of student enrollment - they do not want to over-hire.

third reason - administrators wait to see if veterans are being displaced.

fourth reason - hiring is often a personal thing - principals hire those they know before going into the applicant pool. I have seen long term subs hired for a position - when I know there were many applicants.

Not saying this are good reasons - Ive just found that this happens alot.

    good luck!

  4. If you aren't someone already in the school system, you won't hear until right before school starts.  In my county, transfers of teachers from other county schools are handled first then new-hires.  This takes time.  I would keep dropping by your favorite schools on occasion to let them know you are still available.  Also, it always helps to show that you are willing to coach a sport or something.  In the middle schools in my county, if you are willing to coach a sport, you have a leg up on anyone else.

  5. Apply to be a permanent substitute for a school district(some districts require sub certificates).  That way your foot's in the door and if positions do become available you are already familiar with the school and more likely to be chosen

  6. Wait.  Many teaching jobs are not filled until August.
