I've looked on the web - nothing about hand placement etc. Anyone know where I can find info regarding this?

  1. I don't know what juggling is??? Unless your at the circus...

A good tip (dink) shot is not with the palm of your hand but with your fingers. They need to be stiff and extended out so just the tips of your fingers contact the ball. Also you cannot break your wrist or you will be called for a carry, lift or throw. It is a lot like stabbing the ball with your fingers. This is great for a tight set that will be easily blocked. Go at it like a spike but if you see the set is tight to the net jump more straight up and contact the ball with a short jabbing motion. Remember not to break your wrist or turn it during contact.

When you hit the ball with the palm of your hand and soft pop it over the net it is called a "roll shot". The ball still has some topspin on it when you break your wrist correctly. With this shot you can do your regular spike approach but just before contact you stop your arm motion and just barely swing. Snap your wrist upon contact and that will add some topspin.

  2. well from my own knowledge (i play), just make sure you aren't popping/snapping your wrists.. or breaking them, that will make a good referee call "juggling". when set properly there should be one pop sound. also put hands above head with thumbs and pointer fingers forming a diamond. & be sure to send the ball up high enough for the spiker/hitter/attacker to have time to send the ball over!

(if this is wrong and you were referring to when you just tap the ball over the net.. email me and let me know!)

  4. Well, I don't have any links for you. Sorry. But I do have a little advice...

One thing that will vastly improve your teams tipping success is the ability to sell the hit. I mean a good player goes up like they are going to crush the ball and only switch to tipping form at the last second.

When I see a flaw in another teams defense I go up extra hard and then do a soft accurate tip. Tipping can be your highest percentage shot if are smart and sell it well.

Also, it helps if you know some general tipping strategies. For example, outside hitters that are set inside the court can tip back towards the sideline tight to the net for easy points.

Setters can do the same thing. When your setter is front row, and the blockers are pinching in, to where their OH has come from is easy points.

That's a lot of stuff, but the most important things are to go up strong when you are going to tip, know what situations produce good tip oppurtunities, and of course practice tipping accuracy.

  5. Gordon and vballa have some great ideas above! I agree with "sell the hit" - if you approach and swing the same every time, even if you tip, the defenders will be left in the dark most of the time. I also agree with tipping to movement, meaning, when you see where the blockers are coming from, tip to where they were.

  6. that is really sad dude. you don't even know the difference between setting and tipping and you play?

  7. Most teams play a center back defense.  Typically, that means that the middle of the court on the 10 foot line and the deep corners are open for the tip.  If you hit a lot of hard shots as suggested by vballa19, you have additional tip options.  If you are the outside hitter, you can tip just over the block and down the line.  Since the line digger will be thinking about your hard hit first, they will not likely be able to get a good tip directly behind the blocker.  And the blocker might reach back and mess things up worse.  Another option for the middle depends on the blockers.  Many teams bring their left side over to help block the middle.  Tip to where they came from.  Tip along the net to your right if that blocker does help.  It is VERY effective.  If the left side does not help, you will be tipping directly to them.

I will address the refereeing part of the above answers.  I look for direction and time when I am judging a tip.  If you start a tip in one direction and then change your mind and change the angle of the tip, you will hear my whistle.  If you tip for a long time, you will also hear my whistle.  I will also say that I have never called juggling.  I will not say that a referee has never called juggling.  I will say that it is not a call that they should be making.  A lift or a double hit are the options.  I have seen some referees make a juggling type explanation for their double hit call.  That is not a correct technique.

  8. make sure to snap your wrist and push it more than hit it but make sure it is legal and not carring it.  also develop a cheese shop and hit it out along the net (thats one of the most effective tip shots i know of) also the over the blockers head it great.
