Question:

Teaching with a public relations degree?

I got a BA in Public Relations, but now considering teaching. Maybe middle school age. But since I didn't do education-related classes/degree, what steps can I take? I think I'd like to do social studies type teaching. But I'm afraid I'll have to do a bachelor's degree all over again. Did anyone else out there go to teaching after getting a degree in something unrelated? What are the next steps?

  1. It depends on your state, but I went through an alternative certification program for teaching elementary school after getting a BA in PR....so I know what you're going through ;).  Do a search for alternative certification programs in your state, and visit the website for the Board of Education in your state.  They will probably have a list of programs if your state offers alternative certfication (which most do).

A little PS, depending on what program you go through you might not qualify to teach social studies without some additional work.  I had a minor in Political Science, and still didn't have all the right classes to be considered "Highly Qualified" under No Child Left Behind to teach Social Studies (I was missing a geography class).
