Question:

Teaching without much experience?

I've had my teaching license in my state for 2 years but have not plunged into the world of teaching. I don't have much experience, other than a few volunteer opportunities during college and a summer program where I tutored high school aged students.

To clarify, I was not a part of a teaching program and only have my BA in English. Therefore, I don't have much experience at all and that means not many schools are likely to hire me.

Should I try substituting for a year or so to gain experience? Will that really help and encourage schools to hire me later on? And how is the subbing experience, from those who know?

  1. The substitute teaching is not bad at all , but you really do not get the feeling of a real classroom . You can however gain a reputation at a school for going beyond what you had to do and being a very reliable person and that could get you hired in that district . Good luck and God bless

  2. I dont see it.

You say youve had your teaching license but have never been a part of a teaching program. No state allows this.

You need to earn a credential - even to substitute. NCLB requires this.

If I am incorrect and have just read you wrong - then dont try to read a districts mind - apply.

  3. You don't need anything but a GED to substitute, at least in my state.  I think that being a substitute is really hard and is nothing like being an actual teacher.  It is harder because the students know they can walk all over you when you are just a sub.  Maybe you should apply to be a teacher's aide.  That will get you more experience and you will be in an actual classroom every day and see exactly what goes on.  But substituting will definitely look good on an application to become a teacher.

    Good luck!
