Teaching yourself to play Electric Guitar?

I want to learn how to play guitar. Im 20 years old and I am going to buy one of those cheap electric guitars from kmart for my first guitar. Does anyone have any advice on how to teach yourself the guitar.

Start with a Barbie Jam with Me Electronic Guitar. It comes with a song cartridge loaded with 3 songs so you don't feel bad if it takes a while to learn.
