Team Alabama finished 1st, UNC finished 5th at Tar Heel Invitational
The Alabama Women’s golf team won the Tar Heel Invitational held at the North Carolina’s Finely Golf Club on Sunday. The event catered 18 teams playing for the win with the host UNC finishing at fifth place and team Alabama grabbing the top position.
The Tar Heel leader board stated team Alabama playing a record shattering 836 with a 28 under. The amazing play thus presented placed the team at the winning spot.
The last round of the event started with the sound of the shotgun and 18 teams simultaneously firing off their tees. The finale of the 54 hole event witnessed the UNC team to card a total of 288. The team managed to putt a 2 over par for the weekend ending
at the fifth place.
The team finished at the fourth place in the second last round of the event but somehow faltered in the last round. Their performance at the last two rounds was far better than the one they displayed in the first round. UNC finished at the 12th
place in the first round of the event.
According to the UNC coach Jan Mann, the girls played a good game. Although, they faced difficulties at the last hole of the event and faltered a bit at the 18th, Mann believes that their performance had been rather pleasing.
From the Alabama’s side, Brooke Pancake attained the medalist honour. The junior won after playing against her rival Megan McChrystal. Pancake and the golfer from Louisiana State University both carded a 205 after the 54 holes and ended with an 11 under
par. Pancake has been able to card one of the lowest score in her career till now. She carded a tying 65 on Friday.
Her senior Camilla Lennarth ended her game one stroke short of Pancake while McChrystal stood at the third place. Lennarth managed to score a total of 206 with a 10 under and carded a 69, 67 and then the highest 70 in the three rounds.
From UNC, Catherine O’Donnell led the team in all rounds. She had been able to end her game in the first two rounds under par. The junior at Sunday ended even par and finished her game with a 5 under par in total. O’Donnell said that she felt great after
finishing her Sundays round on a 4 under.
Team Alabama finished their game with a 12 stroke lead over the runner up team LSU.
The UNC coach kept the 18 teams in mind and said that when 14 teams out of 18 are from the top 30, their way from the 14th for the third place was wide open. Mann said that the scoring has been extremely tight and the comeback the team had was
marvellous.
From the individual tournament went under a playoff between McChrystal and Pancake where pancake tookm the first shootout. After the three day long antagonism, the two female golfers were still tied at 11 under and played the hole number one and nine 4 times.
O’Donnell was able to finish her game in the top ten who was trailed by the Courtney Gunter. The player from Matthews N.C was tied for the 19th place overall.
The UNC held Invitational is the one and only event the site hosted this spell. Team UNC believes that playing at the home base is always a comforting advantage. The team believes that the support from the crowd and their awareness with the course is an
advantage to them.
Team Alabama will be playing their final tournament of this season from the 5th till the 7th of November. The SEC Challenge will be held at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford.
