Team Australia claimed the Gold medal at the Men’s Team Sprint
Australian cyclists stole the show during the third race of the UCI Track World Championships 2012. They claimed the top over all position after finishing the Men’s Team Sprint in the fastest time of 00:43:266 to grab the top position.
The French team, consisting of Gregory Bauge, Kevin Sireau and Michael D’ Almeida, rode brilliantly but had to surrender ahead of the mighty Australians.
The Australian team of Shane Perkins, Scott Sunderland, and Matthew Glaetzer finished the sprint in a competitive time of 00:43:266 to register a close win by 0.001 second.
Perkins was delighted after the victory, "Then Matty [Glaetzer] with his last lap brought it home for us. It's fantastic. It just worked really well as a team. All of us cut a tenth [of a second] off our time from qualifying".
He also added that winning in front of the home crowd matters a great deal because of the immense pressure.
Shane’s performance was definitely amongst his best over the past few years, considering the fact that he was riding the Championships after returning from a road accident.
He briefed, "I've definitely got to be happy with that. Especially the home crowd, a lot of pressure, home championships - and with the kind of week I've had".
Gregory Bauge, who's violation of the whereabouts requirements forced France to lose its 2011 world title in the event, said that he was still satisfied with the team's performance.
Perkins is considered as one of the best Track road cyclists. He joined the professional side Team Jayco-Australia in 2007.
He has earned 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal in the previous of Track Cycling World Championships. The cyclist also claimed a bronze medal during the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
He is now looking ahead to help Team Australia at the 2012 Olympic Games later this year.
"This is our absolute best time, we're happy. It is a little bitter but more importantly, in a few months. The Olympics is the most important [event]," he cited.
Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Edward Dawkins of Team New Zealand claimed the third position.
Team Japan, Team China and Team Russia occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth positions in the respective order.
