Team Canada consolidates lead in World Hockey Championships with win over Switzerland-NHL News
Team Canada have consolidated their position in the World Hockey Championships currently underway in Sweden and Finland simultaneously, thanks to their victory over Switzerland on Wednesday, May 09, 2012.
It was rather a hard-fought win for Canada, as at one point they were struggling to break out of the tie with the score of two goals each. They managed to edge past midway through the third period, taking the score to 3-2.
The scorecard was maintained until end of the game with Team Canada at last succeeding to add another victory to their overall record of the event.
Ryan Getzlaf, an Anaheim star from the National Hockey League (NHL), provided the much needed help to Canada by scoring the final goal before which the game looked certain to finish tied.
It was third victory of the tournament for Canadians. They have won two more games after opening the championships with a victory over Slovakia on Friday, May 04.
They also defeated France, but were unlucky to have lost their second game of the championships against their rivals from across the border, Team USA.
With the win over Switzerland, Team Canada have strengthened their position on the points table, among 16 teams taking part in the tournament.
New York's Islanders' John Tavares and Edmonton Oilers' Jordan Eberle scored a goal each for Canada. For Switzerland, Goran Bezina and Damien Brunner scored a goal each.
Team Canada, in spite of the US loss, remains favourites to win the tournament. However, Team US and Russia have equally brighter prospects to win the title.
Meanwhile, in other games of the championships, Slovakia inflicted a defeat on Kazakhstan. The final score was 4-2.
Centre, Tomas Kopecky, scored twice for Slovakia to confirm chances of the victory by his team. Slovakia have already beaten Team USA in the tournament.
In another game, Sweden, one of the hosts of the event, overpowered Germany 5-2, while Norway registered a 6-2 win over Italy.
