Team Canada rallies on with Second Victory against Slovakia in - World Junior Championship Update
Team Canada’s hard work is continuing to pay off as the Canadian youngsters fought off a dedicated Slovakian National Team in their second matchup of the World Junior Championship on Friday, December 28, 2012.
Nearly halfway through the contest, Team Slovakia was leading with a 3-1 advantage, but it was at that point when the Canadian youngsters realized that they had to do something fast if keeping ahead of the series was their goal. Canada countered with five
straight goals after being down by two to make a miraculous comeback and take the win, 6-3.
Mark Scheidele, a seventh overall pick of the Winnipeg Jets during the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, was named the player of the match with his foresight to pot goals and make opportunities throughout the contest.
"As a team [this win] is going to help us down the road," defenseman Morgan Rielly told the media after the game, according to NHL.com. "We understood that each team in the tournament is pretty good and we have to play well every night. Obviously we were
put to the test [Friday] and we played well down the stretch."
Malcolm Subban, the Canadian goalie for the team, was also playing at the top of his game as he blocked 25 of 28 shots and had a perfect record after letting the first three go in earlier than expected.
"He loves playing in the big games and he always seems to rise to the challenge and that's great for us," Team Canada captain, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. "He's going to have to keep doing that the rest of the tournament and I'm sure he will."
Canada is now ahead of archrival, Team United States, as the latter lost in their second contest to the Russian National Team after routing Germany in a major shutout to kick off the series. Canada also entered the scene with a huge win over Germany, but
continued with a second straight now over Slovakia.
Canada and USA are scheduled to play next on Sunday, which will definitely be a matchup to watch as both rivals look to edge above each other.
