Team Czech Republic blows away Team Romania to move into WG 2012 – Davis Cup 2011 WG Play-offs
As anticipated, the Czech squad felt no difficulty in disposing of the Team Romania in the World Group playoffs of the Davis Cup. The belligerent Czech won every matchup in the tie to register a crushing 5-0 victory over the bleak
Romanian side to move into the next round of the competition.
The matchups were held on the clay courts of Centrul National de Tenis, Bucharest, Romania, from 16th to 18th of this month, with the home side failing to live up to the expectations of the local crowd.
The Czech squad was captained by Jaroslav Navratil, with the world number nine, Tomas Berdych, leading the side as the spear head. 25th ranked Radek Stepanek, Lukas Rosol and Jan Hajek were the other members of the team
which tore apart the Romanian hopes mercilessly.
Andrei Pavel was the captain of the Romanian side, which was led by the world number 129, Adrian Ungur. Other Romanian competitors include Victor Crivoi, Horia Tecau and Marius Copil, all losing their matches to the aggressive
Czech opponents.
The tie appeared a completely one-sided affair, with Czech competitors dominating every rubber to claim an assertive victory in the end. Stepanek started the proceedings from the Czech side, taking on Ungur in the opening singles
rubber of the tie on Friday night. The world number 25 had no real trouble in dispensing out the Romanian in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, to put his side in an early lead of 1-0 in the competition.
World number nine, Berdych, then went one-on-one with Crivoi in the second singles rubber of the day and register another straight sets victory for his team, defeating the Romanian 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4). Crivoi got some pace in the
third set of the match but it all came way to late and Berdych took his side to a substantial lead of 2-0.
Copil and Tecau teamed up for Romania to take on Berdych and Stepanek in the decisive doubles matchup, with Czech Republic needing just one more victory to wrap up the tie. The Romanians failed to hold the Czech pressure and succumbed
after a stiff contest to fall out of the competition at 0-3.
In the remaining two singles rubbers, Rosol took down Copil at 6-4, 7-6(2) and Hajek overwhelmed Crivoi, 6-1, 6-4, to wrap up a white-wash victory for the Czech Republic at 5-0.
