Team GB are doing very well - but can they get any medals in athletics?

I can't knock their excellent performance so far. At long last Team GB has struck gold in the swimming pool. I find it hard to believe there has been a 20 year wait, when Britain used to produce great swimmers.

Well done to the rowers for getting gold too. But what about athletics? I wish Paula Radcliffe well, but I am not sure she should be running so soon after breaking her leg.

Britain used to have great track and field athletes, but I would struggle to know any in the team, so I can't see who will do well for team GB there.

I know they have all done well to get there. Just giving their best is an achievement.

  1. They would do great if they would stop doing so many tea breaks ol chap.

  2. No, don't think they can : (

  3. The biggest problem with our athletics team is, that not only do the world not know any of our athletes but the British people don't know them either. There is very poor facilities in Britain for athletics, children are more interested in their Nintendo's than getting out and running.

I used to be the top runner in the county leagues and run the 100m in 10.59 seconds but had no training at all and i was only 15. With proper training i would of improved and you never know i could of gone to the Olympics.

We tend to be good at the Sailing, Rowing and Cycling nowadays, the swimming is looking bright but our athletics won't be anywhere near the American standard for at least 15 years.

But as long as we beat the French then the country is happy!

If we could beat the Aussies then there would be a mass party.

  4. Our boy is favourite for the Triple Jump but don't put your house on him; he's a perennial choker and a massive under achiever.

We're also second favourite for the Women's 400 metres but she's essentially a drug cheat so any medal will be tainted.

  5. Perhaps in the men's triple jump and a chance in the women's 400m.

Outside chance in the men's long jump.

    Apart from that no.

Then again we said that last time about Kelly Holmes and she went on to win gold in the 800m and 1500m.

Although to improve our athletics team we need to break the 'If it's not football (soccer) then it's not a sport' mentality of a large section of the British public.

EDIT: Tha Phuncky Feel One - The UKs No 1 womens 400m runner did not fail a drugs test she missed 3 out of season tests in 18 months but was tested several other times in this time period.

  6. well I'm just watching paula start now and  wish her the best of luck.

as for anyone else I'm not to sure.

as you say we have performed well so far but i think in athletics were a step dow from the like of usa and Jamaica.

by the way did you see the 100m win today by the Jamaican guy? different legue

  7. I don't think they will unless Christina Ohuguru can pull something out of the hat. I watched Chris Boardman say this morning that the reason the cyclists are doing so well is that they have had a major programme of recruitment and training, and picking the ones that are best suited for that particular event,to go for medals,  and in athletics you can see that there are some good athletes but many are still raw and need to race more and toughen up if they are going to be able to compete in 2012.
