Team GBR retains lead over 470 Women, Laser and SKUD fleets at 2012 Miami World Cup: Day 2
Sailing teams from Great Britain have shown promising performances at the 2012 Miami World Cup. The GBR fleet is leading three classes of the regatta; 470 Women, Laser and SKUD with an impressive sailing show at the end of Day 2 on Miami waters.
The leading British sailors in their respective classes include Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark in 470 Women, Paul Goodison in the laser class while Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell are leading the SKUD class after putting up an outstanding sailing display.
In the Laser class, Paul Goodison, the Laser Olympic Champion had a perfect sail on the second day and finished on top of the Laser standings with an impressive score line, clinching two bullets in the Laser blue fleet. The Briton is now looking forward
to retain his overall lead with convincing scores in the upcoming races.
Meanwhile, silver medallists in the 470 women class of the World Championship, Mills and Clark got off to a slow start under unfavourable conditions but they soon made their way with controlled tactics in the best of three-race day to retain their overall
lead at the Rolex Miami OCR. The duo has developed a unique chemistry since they teamed up in February, 2011.
Mills explained about their campaign on second day, “It was a pretty long day – we did three races today and had to get up pretty early for a 1015 start, which is not ideal for me and Sas to be honest! But we got through it and got two bullets in the first
two races and unfortunately got a bit stuck in the middle on the last race.”
“It’s definitely an outcome regatta for us – we want to do as well as possible to start the year on a high and get the momentum going for the rest of the year,” added Mills, “We think that’s pretty important, so we’re definitely looking to do well here,
but we’ve also got a few equipment goals that we’re testing out as well.”
On the other hand, Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, the four-time World Champions managed to stay on top of the SKUD fleet with impressive scores on Day 2. They claimed two second positions in both races of the second day.
