Team Garmin-Barracuda wins the team’s time trial stage 2 at the Tour of Qatar
The 11th edition of the Tour of Qatar has progressed to the second round. A total number of 16 teams gathered at Lusail to compete at the 11.3 kilometre team’s time trial stage of the race.
Team Garmin-Barracuda won the race in a total time of 12 minutes and 38 seconds, while Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Sky Procycling Team claimed the second and the third positions.
The American side won the first team’s time trial of the new season by a close margin of seven seconds and secured important UCI points.
The victory also helped their leading cyclist, Tyler Farrar, with a jump in the overall classifications.
Farrar was at the fourth position after the stage 1 classifications and has now jumped to the second position after his team’s brilliant performance.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step continues his dominance at the golden jersey and is currently leading the stage 2 classifications.
Belgian rider, Johan Van Summeren of Team Garmin-Barracuda took the biggest leap, as he jumped up to the third position after the stage 2 classifications.
He finished the opening stage of the race at the 43rd position and was holding the 46th overall spot after the first stage.
Boonen commented after the race, "It was a great effort by the team and I am really happy to keep the lead, I said yesterday that a top three finish here at the time trial would be a very good job and we managed that”.
He continued, “We only lost to a very strong Garmin team and a lot of our guys are young riders so it was a great performance by them. It was very still here again today and I hope that tomorrow the weather changes so that we can have some different conditions”.
Boonen is also leading the points classifications with a total amount of 15 UCI points to his credit. Adam Blythe, Tyler Farrar, Peter Sagan and Daniel Oss are holding the next four spots.
Ramunas Navardauskas, Davide Appollonio and Guillaume are the three leading young riders according to the stage 2 general classifications.
Team Garmin Barracuda is dominating the stage 2 team’s classifications with Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Sky Procycling Team occupying the second and the third positions.
Boonen is looking good for the overall victory, he is now looking ahead at the 146.5 kilometre stage 3 of the Tour of Qatar, scheduled on Tuesday, February 7th.
