Team Geox-TMC secure first position as Juan Jose Cobo wins stage 15 at Vuelta a Espana 2011
Juan Jose Cobo has managed to win stage 15 with a lead of 48 seconds over Wout Poels and is one of the favourite contenders to win the grand tour as he is leading the stage 15 general classifications by 20 seconds.
The 30-year-old believes that there is still a lot left in the Vuelta a Espana 2011 and it will be hard before time to predict anything about the coming stages.
Cobo shared his thoughts about the future stages of Vuelta a Espana as he said, “I don’t know how the Vuelta is going to end, we still we still have another week of racing ahead and the road to Madrid is still long. Tomorrow will be a rest day, it will be
important for recuperating some energy.”
Jose Cobo’s win at the 144 kilometre stage 15 starting from Aviles and extending up to Angliru also got him the red jersey and Bradley Wiggins had to hand it over to the Spaniard as Wiggins dropped down to third position with 46 seconds behind Cobo.
On winning stage 15 Cobo mentioned that he was feeling strong and confident right from the start of the stage and his legs were really spinning as he decided to attack during the climb and gained a huge lead which he dominated till the finish line.
Juan commented on winning the red jersey as he said, “I’m thrilled; this is without a doubt the most fantastic day of my career.” Team Geox’s Sports director Joxean Fernandez Matxin was pleased by the performance of his team as he mentioned that it was the
ideal day and all their strategies worked out to perfection and that his team has great chances in the coming days of the Vuelta a Espana 2011. He further added that they planned to dominate stage 15 right from the beginning and then Cobo was to use all his
strength to launch the attack and everything went according to the plan.
Cobo’s win has also earned first place for his team Geox-TMC with team Leopard Trek 6 minutes and 47 seconds behind at second and Euskaltel-Euskadi 25 minutes and 5 seconds behind at third position.
Team Geox is not having a very good season as the win by Jose was only the fourth victory by the team so far and it will be interesting to see if the general classifications leader Juan Jose Cobo can continue his dominance till the end of the race to find
his place at the podium. Only time will tell if he can repeat his tremendous display of strength and skill for the remainder of the race.
