Team Great Britain announced its fifteen cyclists to ride the Track Cycling Championships 2012
Great Britain announced its fifteen cyclists to ride the UCI Track World Championships scheduled from April 4-8, 2012.
The selectors made the announcement earlier today and the final team has been elected after consulting the player’s performance at the Track World Cup held in London.
A total number of six cyclists to represent the British squad at the spring’s event comprise Matt Crampton, Philip Hindes, Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish.
Steven Burke, Ed Clancy, Pete Kennaugh, Ben Swift and Geraint Thomas will lead the Men’s squad in Melbourne.
The women’s squad will be accompanied by Wendy Houvenaghel, Dani King, Joanna Rowsell, and Laura Trott will be the top British women at the coming event.
British cyclists were outstanding during the three days of racing during the Track World Cup, as they secured a number of medals and also set two new world records during the contest.
David Brailsford, British Cycling Performance Director, also pointed out that the World Cup scheduled in London was very helpful for the side and hopes that the team will continue its brilliant form in Australian.
He noted, "We have selected a very similar team to travel to the World Championships; the only difference is in the men's sprint squad. In London, Ross Edgar was in the early stages of recovering from an injury and we think the best option for him now is to focus his training".
Brailsford also hinted that Ross Edgar might get an opportunity to ride the 2012 Olympic Games.
He explained that Edgar needs to devote his attention towards the training to ensure his peak form before the home Olympics.
"The sprint coaches also feel that Philip Hindes has shown great potential in training and therefore it would be good for his development to shadow the World Championships team this year. Overall, we're going to Australia feeling confident," he added.
Only time will tell if the British riders can overcome their oldest rivals, Team Australia during the UCI Track World Championships.
It will not be an easy target as the Australian squad will not only have the home advantage.
However, its cyclists are also enjoying a splendid form, which was clear during their top performance at the London World Cup event on February 16-19, 2012.
