Team GreenEdge secured the first stage of the Tirreno Adriatico 2012
Team GreenEdge claimed its first victory at the European soil after succeeding at the first stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012.
The World Tour debutant team finished the 16.9 kilometre stage in a quickest time of 18 minutes and 41 seconds.
Team RadioShack-Nissan achieved the second spot with a margin of 17 seconds behind the Australian side.
Team Garmin-Barracuda finished almost at the same time and grabbed the third spot. Team Sky Procycling and Team Astana occupied the fourth and the fifth positions.
Matthew Harley Goss crossed the finish-line at the first place with a competitive time of 18 minutes and 41 seconds.
Svein Tuft, Sebastian Langeveld, Stuart O’ Grady and Cameron Meyer occupied the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Goss was overwhelmed after bagging his first victory of the season at the third World Tour event of the 2012 season.
He said, "The season started a little bit slower, and it was deliberately aimed to be good at this race and then through Sanremo and the Classics".
“So far it's working. It's a perfect start. It's incredible to win our first team time trial together,” Goss explained with a smile on his face.
The Australian explained that his current form is almost similar to last year’s Milan- San Remo.
He claimed the first position at the French race including the stage victories at the Paris-Nice, Tour of California, Tour of Oman and Tour Down Under.
Goss finished second at the Tour Down Under and his second place finish at the Road World Championships wrapped up a perfect 2011 year for Matthew.
He is now eyeing the 230 kilometre chase to Indicatore and believes that Mark Cavendish will be his biggest opponent on the second stage.
The 25-year-old cited, "The stage will probably end in a sprint, I'll be up against [Mark] Cavendish but against everyone else too".
“We'll try and do something ourselves and keep the leader's blue jersey for the next two days," Matthew voiced about the coming stages of the race.
The last time Cavendish and Goss were seen together was during the UCI World Road Championships where Goss fell short and had to settle for the second spot.
