Team Haye rejects Roy Jones Jr. offer
No hard feelings, Roy.
After extending a fighting offer to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, Roy Jones Jr. has come up empty handed.
The one-time best in the world made an offer to “The Hayemaker” yesterday, and was thoroughly rejected Thursday, with a representative from Haye’s team saying Jones is “shot” and that Haye would absolutely
not consider him a prospective opponent.
On Wednesday Jones said: “I am meeting David and will tell him that we can give the world a great fight. I want one more run at the title," Jones said.
In the old days, it wouldn’t have been about ‘giving the world a great fight.’ It would have been about beating Jones, who is no longer the contender he once was.
Jones earned the WBA heavyweight title in 2003 after he decisioned John Ruiz, an opponent Haye knocked out earlier this year with ease. After winning the heavyweight title Jones moved back down to the
light heavyweight division, and was eventually stripped of his title for inactivity.
Jones has stared at defeat in his last two bouts, against Danny Green in December and Bernard Hopkins more recently in April. In the former Jones was sadly knocked out in the first round, evidence that
talents have all but evaporated into thin air in the ring.
Jones was likely due to face Danny Santiago this month but dropped out after reporting a hand injury. Insiders say the real reason for the cancellation was because the event, to be in Jones’s home of
Pensacola, could not attract any foreseeable profit.
Haye is currently training for a November meet with European heavyweight champion Audley Harrison. Haye is the favourite and expected to win, though the victory will have little bearing on his legacy
as a fighter. Negotiations for fights with the Klitschko brothers have amounted to little at this time and Haye doesn’t seem overly excited to engage them.
